Biography

El Tri is a Mexican rock band, known for being instrumental in the development of the country’s rock music scene. The group splintered off from an earlier rock band titled Three Souls in My Mind, a rock group that was formed in 1968 by singer/guitarist Alex Lora and drummer Carlos "Charly" Hauptvogel. When financial issues caused tensions in the group, Alex Lora decided to form El Tri, which was already the nickname that the band’s followers called them by. In 1984, El Tri released their debut album Simplemente, which became the first Mexican rock album to be certified gold. The band would go on to even greater success with their third album Niño Sin Amor, which was certified multi-platinum. In the 1990s, El Tri expanded their fanbase by touring extensively through the United States, releasing the concert film En Vivo Desde el Hollywood Palladium. In 1995, they became the third rock band to record a session for MTV Unplugged. 2003 saw the release of the career retrospective Los Número Uno: Éxitos 1968-2003, which compiles notable songs from the band’s career (including songs originally released under the name Three Souls in My Mind). Over the following decades, the band continued touring extensively and releasing new albums such as Más Allá del Bien y del Mal (2005), Nada Que Perder (2008), and Nacimos Para Rodar (2017).
