Biography
Singer and songwriter Ãdith Lefel was born on November 17, 1963 in Cayenne, French Guiana, to a Martinican father and a Guyanese mother. Immersed in music from an early age, she became a backing singer in her brother's band at the age of 14. She sang in a variety of groups, ranging from Creole rhythms to jazz. In 1984, she met Ronald Rubinel, who became her partner and producer. In 1987, she joined Malavoi and her career took off. She performed alongside Philippe Lavil and Zouk Machine. Her first solo album came out in 1988, La kle, for which she won the Sacem prize for best songwriter. This was followed by five studio albums, Méci (1992), Rendez-vous (1996), Sanglots (1996), Chante Ãdith Piaf (1999), à fleur de peau (1999) and Si seulement (2002), the eponymous track of which remains a big hit. A live album at L'Olympia was also released in 1996. Highlights include "Somnifère " and "Mon Ange ". Ãdith Lefel died of a heart attack in hospital on January 20, 2003.
