Biography

Early James is the stage name of singer, guitarist and songwriter Frederick James Mullis Jr. born in Troy, Alabama, on June 2, 1993, and founder of Early James & the Latest. After receiving his first guitar as a Christmas present at the age of sixteen, he began to learn and write his first songs, inspired in particular by Johnny Cash. He began by supporting his friend Fire Mountain's band, then moved to Birmingham, where he took his pseudonym and formed Early James & the Latest in the early 2010s. During a concert, he was visited by Dan Auerbach, half of blues-rock duo The Black Keys, who signed him in 2019 to his Easy Eye Sound label and produced the debut album Singing for My Supper (2020), in which his blend of blues, rock, Americana, folk and country flourishes. While the Covid-19 pandemic cancels touring plans, Early James gets down to composing his second album, Strange Time to Be Alive, which sees the light of day in August 2022, after a series of concerts with The Lone Bellow. The track "Real Low Down Someone" was a big hit on listening platforms, and featured a guest appearance by singer Sierra Ferrell. Early James then headed to Nashville's Honky Chateau studio to record a more intimate album with bassist Adrian Marmolejo, Medium Raw, which was released in early 2025 and reached number 11 in the blues charts.
