Biography

Discharge, formed in 1977 in Stoke‑on‑Trent, Staffordshire, emerged from the early UK punk scene with founding members Terence “Tezz” Roberts (vocals), Royston “Rainy” Wainwright (guitar), and Anthony “Bones” Roberts (lead guitar). The band’s first breakthrough came with the Why EP in 1980, which reached Number 1 on the UK Indie Chart and introduced their signature D‑beat. Throughout the 1980s Discharge released seminal albums such as Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing (1982), and Grave New World (1986), the latter achieving a top ten indie position. The group signed to Clay Records, toured extensively across Europe, North America, and Asia, and influenced the development of thrash, grindcore, and crust punk. After a period of lineup changes and a brief disbandment in 1987, Discharge re‑formed in 1990, producing Massacre Divine (1991) and Shootin' Up the World (1993). In 2001 the original lineup reunited, releasing the self‑titled album Discharge (2002) and later Disensitise (2008). The 2016 album End of Days entered the UK Rock Charts at number 10, marking the band’s continued relevance. Over the years, Discharge remained a pivotal force in hardcore punk and extreme metal, with their work frequently cited and covered by prominent acts worldwide.
