Diesel, a Dutch pop-rock band, were formed in October 1978 by ex-Kayak drummer Pim Koopman. The group initially comprised Pim Koopman on drums, keyboard, and vocals; Rob Vunderink on guitar and lead vocals; Mark Boon on guitar; and Frank Papendrecht on bass. Their first album, Watts in a Tank, was released in the Netherlands in 1980 and spawned the hit single "Going Back to China", which became a Top 40 hit. The band's breakthrough came with the release of "Sausalito Summernight" (also known as "Sausolito Summernight"), which reached number 25 on the US Top 40 in late 1981 and number one in Canada. This success led to an American tour and a distribution deal with Atco Records. In 1982, Diesel released their second album, Unleaded, but it did not achieve the same level of success. The band underwent several line-up changes before going their separate ways in 1985. Diesel reformed multiple times, notably in 1988 and 2000, releasing new material and performing charity events. In March 2017, a single "Like Hell I Will!" was released featuring original members Rob Vunderink and Mark Boon with new additions. Both Frank Papendrecht and Pim Koopman passed away from heart attacks within one week of each other in November 2009.
