Biography

Formed in Popayán, Cauca, in 2013, Cumbia Kalle emerged as a “new cumbia” project led by Rubén Darío Chicue (stage name Ronny), who had previously played accordion with the Cauca group Los Hermanos Medina. The act built its identity around a hybrid dance-floor approach that blended Colombian cumbia with technocumbia, raspa/tropical rhythms, and urban-style beats, and it began circulating original material alongside crowd-tested reinterpretations. By 2018, Cumbia Kalle was actively touring Colombia’s coffee region while promoting its version of the 1990s song “Tu Tienes la Culpa.” In 2021, the group’s catalog expanded with releases tied to Pasiones Prohibidas, including “No Puedo Más” and the single “Palomitas De Maíz,” which became one of its most widely circulated tracks on streaming platforms. Cumbia Kalle also released “Solo” in 2022 and kept leaning into a modernized cumbia palette in subsequent singles. In 2024, they returned with “Tramposa,” a recording made in Colombia (Batuta Estudios) of a song credited to the Bolivian band Roy y Los Gentiles. Through 2025, the project stayed active with a steady run of singles, including “Al Calor De La Cumbia,” while continuing to position itself as a party-forward cumbia act with crossover ambitions.
