Biography
Clarence Eugene Shaw (also known as âGene Shawâ; 1926â1973) was an American jazz trumpeter from Detroit, Michigan. Originally a pianist and trombonist, Shaw switched to trumpet in 1946 after hearing the Dizzy Gillespie track âHot Houseâ. He studied with Barry Harris at the Detroit Institute of Music. In Detroit, Shaw performed with Lester Young and Wardell Gray before relocating to New York in 1956. He joined Charles Mingus' Jazz Workshop in 1957, contributing to the albums Tijuana Moods, East Coasting, and A Modern Jazz Symposium of Music and Poetry. Following a dispute with Mingus, Shaw destroyed his trumpet and worked as a goldsmith. He returned to music in 1962 in Chicago, releasing solo albums including Breakthrough (1962), Debut in Blues (1963), and Carnival Sketches (1964). Shaw retired again in 1964 but returned once more in 1968. Shaw died in Los Angeles on August 17, 1973.
