Biography

Gordon McChesney Smith, known professionally as Ches Smith, was born in San Diego, California and raised in Sacramento. He is an American musician who began his musical journey studying philosophy at the University of Oregon before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1995. There, he studied composition, improvisation, and percussion with notable figures such as Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros, William Winant, and Alvin Curran. Smith's career took off when he released his debut solo album Congs for Brums in 2006. He went on to release several albums, including Reasons for Moving (2007) and The Bell (2016) with the trio featuring Craig Taborn and Mat Maneri. Throughout his career, Smith has collaborated extensively as a sideman on numerous albums, including Interpret It Well (2022) and Laugh Ash (2024).
