Biography

Roscoe Mitchell is an acclaimed and influential American jazz musician noted for his individual and innovative approach to the genre. He has played and recorded with many top artists and performed around the world. Drummer Jack DeJohnette's 2015 album 'Made in Chicago: Live at the Chicago Jazz Festival' features Mitchell on baroque flute, bass recorder and saxophone along with the late Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, Larry Gray on double bass and violin and Henry Threadgill on bass flute and alto saxophone. The record went to number 14 on Billboard's Jazz Albums Chart. He played many instruments on his own two-disc release 'Bells for the South Side', recorded in 2015 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, reaching number eleven in 2017. Born in Chicago, he learned to play the saxophone and clarinet as a child, studied music in school and played in a jazz band during military service in Germany. Returning to Illinois, he played in local bands and in 1965 was among the founders of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians with whom he recorded his first album 'Sound' in 1966. He played with the Art Ensemble of Chicago which garnered high praise around the world through the 1970s and '80s and made many recordings with the Creative Arts Collective. He has recorded many solo albums including 'Improvisations' with the late drummer Tony Marsh and double bass player John Edwards, 'Conversations' and 'Conversations II' (2014) with keyboard player Craig Taborn and percussionist Kikanju Baku, 'In Pursuit of Magic' (2014) with drummer Mike Reed, 'Angel City' with the Roscoe Mitchell Trio featuring with James Fei on bass and sax and William Winant on percussion and 'Ride the Wind' (2018) with various sidemen.
