Biography

Gong is a French-British progressive rock group founded by Daevid Allen (1938-2016) and Gilli Smyth (1933-2016). The duo emerged from the late 1960s underground scene, with Daevid Allen’s first album Magick Brother released in 1970. Their early work blended psychedelic, jazz, and space rock, culminating in Camembert Electrique (1971) and Flying Teapot (1973), produced by Virgin Records. Subsequent albums Angel's Egg (1973), You (1974), and Shamal (1976), followed by collaborations with Steve Hillage and others, expanded their catalogue through the 1970s and 1990s, with Gong signing to various labels, including Mantra, GAS Records, Voiceprint, G-Wave, Gonzo Multimedia, Madfish and Kscope. After Daevid Allen’s cancer diagnosis and death on 13 March 2015, Gilli Smyth died on 22 August 2016. The remaining members released Rejoice! I'm Dead! (2016), The Universe Also Collapses (2019) and Unending Ascending (2023). Gong’s mythology and experimental style influenced contemporary progressive and ambient artists. In 2026, the band released their 20th original studio album, Bright Spirit.
