Biography

Brown Horse is a Norwich-based alt-country band known for their evocative blend of 1990s alternative rock, 1970s folk, and country influences. Formed in 2018 as a folk quartet, the group evolved into a six-piece ensemble, incorporating elements of indie rock and Americana into their sound. Their music is characterised by twangy guitars, pedal steel, accordion, and harmonised vocals, creating a sound that resonates with fans of artists like Lucinda Williams, Jason Molina, and The Breeders. Currently comprising members Emma Tovell (vocals, guitar), Nyle Holihan (guitar, vocals), Patrick Turner (bass, vocals), Rowan Braham (drums), Ben Auld (keyboards), and Phoebe Troup (violin), Brown Horse began by performing old-time standards and original songs in pubs across England. After a hiatus due to the pandemic, they reunited in 2022, expanding their lineup and sound. Their debut album, Reservoir, was released in January 2024, recorded over four days in Norfolk, and received critical acclaim for its haunting and intimate alt-country style. In April 2025, they released their sophomore album, All The Right Weaknesses, on Loose Music. Recorded live in a week at Sickroom Studios, the album captures the energy and cohesion developed during their extensive European tour. The record showcases the band's growth, blending their roots in folk and country with a more expansive, guitar-driven sound.
