Biography

Magnolia Electric Co., formed in 2003 by former Songs: Ohia frontman Jason Molina, emerged from the American alternative rock scene with a blend of country‑driven rock. The group released its first live collection, Trials & Errors, in 2005, followed by the studio album What Comes After the Blues the same year, establishing a steady output of music that combined energetic instrumentation with lyrical depth. Subsequent releases included Fading Trails (2006), the EP Hard to Love a Man (2007), Sojourner (2007), and the 2009 EP It's Made Me Cry before culminating with the studio album Josephine (2009), which became the band’s most commercially successful record. After Jason Molina’s health‑related hiatus and his death on March 16, 2013, the band’s activity ceased. In 2025, surviving members of Magnolia Electric Co. teamed up with Will Johnson, of Centro-Matic, to perform and record music under the name Magnolia & Johnson Electric Co.
