Biography

Jazz pianist Bobo Stenson was born in Sweden in 1944. From a musical family (his mother was a violinist, his father was a pianist) he began his career in 1963 when, at the age of just 19, he made his name accompanying Stan Getz and Sonny Rollins. He released his debut solo album, 'Underwear', in 1971 and followed with 'The Sounds Around the House' in 1983 and 'Very Early' in 1986. In between his solo releases he worked with Jan Garbarek on 1971's 'Sart', 1973's 'Witchi-Tai-To' and 1975's 'Dansere'. He also collaborated with Rena Rama on 'Jazz I Sverige' in 1973 and 'Landscapes' in 1977, working with Charles Lloyd on 'Fish Out of Water' in 1989. Further solo albums came with 'Reflections' (1993), 'War Orphans' (1997) and 'Serenity' (1999), and he began the new decade with 'Goodbye' (2005). In 2006 he was awarded the European Jazz Prize of Musician of the Year and, with his ensemble The Bobo Stenson Trio, he released 'Cantando' in 2007 for which he won the Swedish Award for Best Jazz Music.
