Biography

John Foxx, whose real name is Dennis Leigh, is an English musician who gained fame as the lead singer of the British new wave band Ultravox in the 1970s and went on to a solo career known for electronic synthesiser music. Born in Lancashire on 26 September 1948, he went to art school and formed a band named Tiger Lily, which eventually became Ultravox. He left the band and released his debut solo album Metamatic, which reached number 18 on the UK Official Albums Chart. The Golden Section reached number 27 on the Albums Chart in 1983 and In Mysterious Ways stalled at number 85 in 1985. He set up a studio in 1982 where acts such as Depeche Mode, Brian Eno, The Cure, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Tina Turner recorded. He left the music business to be a graphic artist in the mid-1980s and returned in the mid-1990s, releasing Cathedral Oceans in 2003. He collaborated with many artists including Louie Gordon, with whom he made several albums. He made a solo instrumental album, Tiny Colour Movies in 2006 and Interplay with Benge (Ben Edwards) as John Foxx and the Maths. A three-CD deluxe edition of Metamatic came out in May 2018. In subsequent years, he continued to explore more ambient instrumental music, releasing a new solo piano album, Wherever You Are, in March 2025.
