Biography

Embracing kitsch 1960s glamour, bubblegum pop and jangling new wave guitar bands, the Georgian friends crimped their beehive hairdos as high as they could and became The B-52's, one of the most feel-good, fun-time bands of the 1980s. Debut single Rock Lobster quickly became a word-of-mouth cult hit before albums The B-52's (1979) and Wild Planet (1980) won critical acclaim and an underground following. However, the death of guitarist Ricky Wilson in 1985 from AIDS sent the band into turmoil and although his final album Bouncing Off The Ceilings (1986) was released, the band went into seclusion. They returned in triumph with their biggest commercial hit album Cosmic Thing (1989) led by the classic party anthem Love Shack and the US Number 3 single Roam. Kate Pierson went on to duet with Iggy Pop and feature on the REM hit Shiny Happy People, and the band found more fame when they featured in The Flintstones movie and had a UK Number 3 hit with the theme tune (Meet) The Flintstones in 1994. Still going strong, the band released their seventh studio album Funplex in 2008.
