Biography

Bhekumuzi Luthuli, born on July 13, 1961 in KwaMaqumbi, KwaMaphumulo, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, was a South African Maskandi musician. He started making traditional Zulu music on a homemade guitar and joined the Mbaqanga band Oshomi in Durban in the early 1980s. Luthuli's solo career began with releases like Unembeza (1991) and Wongikhonzela Enhliziyweni (1989), both of which won OKTV awards. He released over 23 albums, including Impempe (2005), which sold over 50,000 copies. His 2010 album Imali YabeLungu reached gold status in one week and the title track won a SATMA 2011 award for best song. His final release was Isipho (The Gift) (2011). Luthuli passed away on April 7, 2010 in Durban after complications from a stroke. He was posthumously nominated for the 2012 South African Music Awards in the categories of Male Artist of the Year and Best Traditional Music Album.
