Biography

Australian singer and musician Bernard Fanning was born on August 15, 1969 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He began his music career at a young age, learning to play the piano from his mother and composing his own songs by the age of 15. After studying journalism in college, Fanning dropped out to pursue a career in music, forming the alternative rock band Powderfinger in 1989 with guitarist Ian Haug, bassist John Collins, and drummer Steven Bishop, with Fanning on guitar and lead vocals. The band released seven studio albums between 1994 and 2009, five of which reached the number one spot on the Australian charts. Fanning began his solo career in 2004, releasing Tea & Sympathy in 2005, which proved to be a huge success, reaching number 1 on the Australian charts and certified five-times platinum, with lead single “Wish You Well” spending 58 weeks on the charts and voted into the number 1 position on the 2005 Triple J Hottest 100 countdown. The album earned Fanning several ARIA awards including Best Male Artist and Album of the Year. In 2011 he released his second number 1 album Departures, followed by Civil Dusk (2016) and Brutal Dawn (2017), both peaking at number 2. After a five-year hiatus, Bernard Fanning re-released his single “Wish You Well” featuring rapper Baker Boy, in 2022.
