Biography

Junelie Otero Barrios, known professionally as Bayang Barrios, was born on June 12, 1968, in Bunawan, Agusan del Sur, Philippines. She is a Filipino folk musician and singer of Manobo origin. She was given the nickname "Bayang" based on a Manobo tradition of naming a child after the first word the mother hears during labor; her mother heard the first word of the Philippine national anthem. Barrios joined Joey Ayala's band, Joey Ayala at ang Bagong Lumad, utilizing indigenous instruments. She released her debut album, Bayang Makulay, in 1996. Her third album, Alon, was released in 2004, followed by Malaya in 2013. Her composition "Isipin Mo Na Lang", co-written with her husband Mike Villegas, was featured in the indie film Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo
