Harvey Charles Goering, known professionally as Barrelhouse Chuck, was born on July 10, 1958 in Columbus, Ohio. He started playing drums at age six and later transitioned to the piano. After moving to Gainesville, Florida, Goering was inspired by Muddy Waters' records and began learning blues piano techniques. He achieved distinction as the only Chicago blues pianist to have studied under legends including Sunnyland Slim, Pinetop Perkins, Blind John Davis, Detroit Junior, and Little Brother Montgomery. Barrelhouse Chuck's debut album, Salute to Sunnyland Slim, was released in 1999. He followed up with Prescription for the Blues (2002) and Got My Eyes On You (2006). Barrelhouse Chuck collaborated with notable artists such as Jimmy Rogers, Eddie Taylor, Hubert Sumlin, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, and Otis "Big Smokey" Smothers. In 2013 and 2014, Goering was nominated for Blues Music Awards in the Pinetop Perkins Piano Player category He maintained a full performance schedule until his death on December 12, 2016, after battling prostate cancer.
