Biography

Andrew Carwood was born on April 30, 1965, and is an English musician and choral conductor. Carwood served as a choral scholar in the Choir of St John's College, Cambridge under George Guest. His early career included roles as a lay clerk at Christ Church, Oxford and Westminster Cathedral before becoming Director of Music at the London Oratory Church. Carwood gained recognition for his performances of English repertoire, including works by William Byrd and the role of the Male Chorus in Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia. Carwood directed his own group, The Cardinall’s Musick, performing throughout the United Kingdom and Europe and releasing over thirty recordings of Renaissance music for Hyperion Records. Carwood won multiple Gramophone Early Music Awards. He was appointed Director of Music at St Paul's Cathedral in London in 2007, becoming the first non-organist to hold this post since the 12th century. In 2022, Carwood was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to choral music.
