Biography

David John Munrow was a British musician and early music historian born on August 12, 1942, in Birmingham. While attending King Edward's School, he performed as a bassoonist. Munrow traveled to South America in 1960 to collect traditional instruments before studying at Pembroke College, Cambridge. Encouraged by Thurston Dart, he explored early European instruments and formed the Early Music Consort of London in 1967. Munrow provided music for the television series The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1970) and Elizabeth R (1971). His discography of over 50 records includes Music of the Crusades (1971) and The Art of the Netherlands (1976). He presented the BBC Radio 3 program Pied Piper and published the book Instruments of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Munrow died on May 15, 1976. Posthumously, he received a Grammy Award in 1977 for The Art of Courtly Love, and his recordings were included on the Voyager Golden Record.
