Singer, composer and voice teacher Alexis Joi was born in Gary, Indiana. Gifted with a contralto voice, she began singing in church and immersed herself in gospel music, as well as soul and jazz, which she practiced simultaneously. From local church performances, she goes on to perform and record for the Voices of Faith International label. In 2014, she released her debut album Striving (Live in LA), recorded during a concert in Los Angeles and featuring gospel hymns and covers of classics, followed two years later by Royal Renditions (Hymns & Spirituals), featuring her versions of "Precious Lord", "Amazing Grace" or "Motherless Child". This gospel-oriented album was followed by the hit "The River" (2018), which charted on several listening platforms and in the gospel charts. In 2019, More Than Love is devoted to jazz standards, musicals like "Summertime" and pop with "La Vie en rose", before the 2020 release of the single "Say a Little Prayer", immortalized by Aretha Franklin. In 2021, Improvise returns to jazz standards in extended personal versions.
