Biography

Alfred Aloysous Bernard, known professionally as Al Bernard, was born on November 23, 1888, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and was an American singer. He began his career traveling with minstrel shows as a blackface singer. His breakthrough came with the release of "The St. Louis Blues", written by W.C. Handy, which he recorded multiple times for various labels. Bernard's collaboration with Ernest Hare on "I Want to Hold You in My Arms", in which he took the female singing part, became one of his most successful songs. In 1925, he began to record hillbilly songs, combining country and western with Chicago Blues. Bernard continued recording into the 1940s and passed away on March 6, 1949.
