Biography

Able Tasmans were an indie pop band from Auckland, New Zealand, formed in 1983. The initial lineup consisted of Graeme Humphreys and Craig Baxter, who had previously played together in the Whangārei band Sister Ray. They released their first EP, The Tired Sun, in 1985 on Flying Nun Records. Their debut album, A Cuppa Tea And A Lie Down (1987), was critically acclaimed. The band's lineup evolved over the years, with notable members including Peter Keen, David Beniston, Leslie Jonkers, Jane Dodd, Ronald Young, Craig Mason, and Stuart Greenway. Their other studio albums include Hey Spinner! (1991), Somebody Ate My Planet (1992), and Store in a Cool Place (1995). After disbanding in 1996, they released a 'best of' compilation titled Songs from the Departure Lounge in 1998. Beniston passed away on May 7, 2011.
