Graeme Downes is a New Zealand singer, songwriter, and guitarist who was born in 1958. He formed the rock band The Verlaines in Dunedin in 1981. The group made its recorded debut on the Dunedin Double EP (1981) through Flying Nun Records. Downes led the band through multiple lineups and became known for intricate song structures and downbeat lyrics. Its signature songs include âDeath and the Maidenâ and âC.D. Jimmy Jazz & Meâ. In 2001, Downes released the solo album Hammers and Anvils. The Verlaines contributed to the soundtrack of the film Eden. The band's studio albums include Hallelujah All the Way Home (1985), Bird Dog (1987), and Dunedin Spleen (2020). Downes retired from his academic role at the University of Otago in 2020.
