Biography

R&B singer Rell, born Gerrell Gaddis on July 22, 1976, abandoned his medical studies at South Carolina State University to make it in the music business. In 1997 he signed with Roc-A-Fella records and began shaping his debut album. His debut single, “Ghetto Stash” featuring Memphis Black failed to make a dent on the charts. He continued to work on his first album, releasing the single “Love for Free” in 1998. When that and two follow-up singles were indifferently received, plans to release his album were scrapped. Rell became ubiquitous on other artists’ tracks including Dr. Dre’s “The Message”. At the beginning of the new century, he tried again to fashion a debut album, but the tepid release of two more singles, “It’s Obvious” and “That’s My Baby”, led to the shelving of the album yet again. He began to work on a new album in 2004, but as the release date approached in 2006 he changed from Roc-A-Fella to Dame Dash Music Group. He felt the album was not going to get enough support, and it was never released. Rell wrote “Here I Stand” for Usher in 2008, and one year later formed The Revelations with Tre Williams. He returned to South Carolina and formed an independent label where he helped up and coming performers learn the business aspects of a career in music.
