Shaffer Chimere Smith, known professionally as Ne-Yo, was born on October 18, 1979, in Camden, Arkansas, and was raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. After an early stint in the group Envy, he broke through as a songwriter in the mid-2000s when Marioâs âLet Me Love You,â which he co-wrote, became a major hit. Signing to Def Jam, Ne-Yo released his debut album In My Own Words in 2006, led by âSo Sick,â âWhen Youâre Mad,â and âSexy Love.â The album reached number one in the United States, as did âSo Sick,â establishing him as both a polished R&B vocalist and a hit writer. He followed in 2007 with Because of You, another US number one album, which won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album. In 2008, Year of the Gentleman brought some of his defining singles, including âCloser,â âMiss Independent,â and âMad,â while âMiss Independentâ earned Grammys for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. Alongside his solo career, Ne-Yo wrote or co-wrote major songs for artists including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson, and Celine Dion. He continued with the concept album Libra Scale in 2010, then expanded his pop and dance reach through Pitbullâs âGive Me Everythingâ and his own 2012 album R.E.D., released after his move from Def Jam to Motown, where he also took on an A&R role. The mid-2010s brought Non-Fiction in 2015, Good Man in 2018, and acting and television work, including The Wiz Live! and dance-competition appearances. After the holiday album Another Kind of Christmas in 2019, he returned with Self Explanatory in 2022, featuring songs such as âWhat If,â âStay Down,â and âDonât Love Me.â In 2024, Ne-Yo began an independent chapter with â2 Million Secrets,â followed by a Las Vegas residency. In 2025, he made his Broadway debut as Davis in Alicia Keysâ Hellâs Kitchen, and in 2026 he prepared Highway 79, a Nashville-recorded, country-inspired album led by âSimple Things,â âUp Out & Gone,â and âMs. Tundra,â while touring with Akon.
