Biography

Born in Los Angeles, California, in 1973, Alejandro Ocana, known professionally as 2Mex, is a prominent figure in the city's underground hip-hop scene. His career began at the Good Life Cafe open mic nights in 1992, where he co-founded the group Of Mexican Descent. He gained wider recognition in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 1998, 2Mex made his album debut with The Visionaries on the LP Galleries and released the first Of Mexican Descent album, Éxitos y Más Éxitos. He also appeared on the Omid compilation album Beneath the Surface. 1999 saw him feature on the Fat Jack compilation Cater to the DJ and release his solo project Fake It Till You Make It under The Mind Clouders, partnering with producer Mums the Word. His next major release, B-Boys in Occupied Mexico, came out in 2001. Over the next few years, he released several albums including Sweat Lodge Infinite in 2003 and his self-titled album in 2004. In 2010, he dropped My Fanbase Will Destroy You on Strange Famous Records, featuring artists like Murs and Busdriver. 2Mex faced a significant personal challenge in 2016 when he had a leg amputated due to diabetes complications. He addressed his struggles in his 2017 album Lospital. More recently, in 2021, he released Word Murder, a book encompassing lyrics for 70 songs, 30 unreleased poems, a detailed biography, and photography. That year, he also delivered the full-length album Ghostwriting Songs for God.
