Biography

Gang Starr was a rap group formed in Brooklyn, New York in 1986 by rappers Guru and DJ 1,2 B-Down joined by other hip-hop performers such as Donald D, JV Johnson and The 45 King. They released three singles but by 1989 Guru was the only member left and he linked with rapper DJ Premier to continue with the name Gang Starr. They released 'No More Mr. Nice Guy' in 1989 followed in 1991 by 'Step in the Arena'. 'Daily Operation' (1992) went to number 14 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart, 'Hard to Earn' (1994) reached number two, 'Moment of Truth' (1998) topped the chart, 'Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr' (1999) peaked at number eleven and 'The Ownerz' (2003) hit number five. The band broke up in 2003 and Guru died of a heart attack in April 2010. In 2019, DJ Premier released a new single under the Gang Starr name titled 'Family and Loyalty' later followed by album 'One of the Best Yet'.
