Biography

Box Car Racer was formed in 2001 in San Diego, California, by Blink‑182 guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker, with guitarist David Kennedy and bassist Anthony Celestino joining later. The project emerged as a side‑project during a Blink‑182 break, allowing DeLonge to explore darker songwriting that did not fit Blink‑182’s pop‑punk style. In May 2002 the band released its self‑titled debut album Box Car Racer under MCA Records; the record entered the Billboard 200 at number 12 and produced singles such as "I Feel So" and "There Is", the former reaching number 8 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The group embarked on a North American headlining tour in fall 2002 with The Used as support, and performed their final show in Detroit on 17 December 2002. DeLonge concluded the project in mid‑2003, citing its purpose as fulfilled, and the band effectively disbanded that year. The album’s chart performance and the single "I Feel So" remain notable milestones, reflecting the project’s impact on the early 2000s alternative rock scene.
