Willemijn Verkaik, born 16â¯Juneâ¯1975 in Sonâ¯enâ¯Breugel, Netherlands, is a Dutch singerâactor who has performed in multiple languages. After studying at the Rotterdam Conservatory and briefly at Guildford, she entered the musical theatre scene with ensemble work in the Dutch production of Elisabeth and later gained recognition for her role as Elphaba in Wicked, which she performed over 2â¯000 times across German, Dutch, and English productions, becoming the only performer to portray the character in three languages. Her breakthrough as a recording artist came with the 2013 studio release Die Eiskönigin Völlig Unverfroren, a Germanâlanguage album featuring her rendition of "Let It Go" from Disneyâs Frozen. In addition to her theatre work, Verkaik has contributed voice performances to the Dutch and German versions of Frozen, and has recorded cast albums for Wicked and Aida. She has collaborated with artists such as Scott Alan, appearing on his Live album recorded at Birdland in 2012. Verkaikâs career includes multiple award nominations, including being named Wicked Personality of the Year in 2010 and 2011 by BroadwayIsWicked.com, and winning the Musicalworld Award in 2012 for her portrayal of Elphaba. Her continued performances across Europe and the United States have solidified her status in contemporary musical theatre.
