William Ackerman is a German-born American guitarist and record producer born on November 16, 1949. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by new-age music and for founding Windham Hill Records. Ackerman achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he was adopted by a professor from Stanford University and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He achieved professional recognition for founding Windham Hill Builders in 1972 while performing music for theater productions. His recording career began after he released the debut studio recording In Search of the Turtle's Navel (1976) on his own label. Ackerman achieved professional recognition for signing the musician George Winston and the musician Michael Hedges to the label. He achieved professional recognition for leaving California in 1984 to establish Imaginary Road Studios in Vermont. His discography included the studio recording It Takes a Year (1977) and the studio recording Childhood and Memory (1979). He achieved professional recognition for the studio recording Returning (2004) which received a Grammy award for Best New Age Album. His recording career included the studio recording New England Roads (2010) and the studio recording Positano Songs (2021). Ackerman achieved professional recognition for the collaborative studio recording Brothers (2021) which received a Grammy nomination.
