Biography

Walter "Wally" Rose, born on October 2, 1913, in Oakland, California, was an American jazz and ragtime pianist. He began his career in the early 1930s performing with dance orchestras and on ships. In 1938, he joined Harry Barris' band before becoming the pianist for Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band from 1939 to 1950. His recording of "Black and White Rag" and "Temptation Rag" from 1941 to 1942 marked the beginning of the ragtime revival. Rose then worked with Bob Scobey in 1951 and Turk Murphy from 1952 to 1954, releasing albums such as Ragtime Classics (1953). He also released several albums, including Ragtime Piano Masterpieces (1953) and Rags-Blues-Joys (1994). He performed at notable festivals, including the Newport Jazz Festival in 1973. Rose passed away on January 12, 1997, in Walnut Creek, California.
