Biography
Benjamin Wade Ward, also known as Uncle Wade or Wade Ward, was born on Octoberâ¯15,â¯1892, in Independence, Virginia, and was a banjo player and fiddler. He began playing the banjo at eleven under his brother Davy Crockett Ward and performed from 1919, joining the Buck Mountain Band. In 1925, he recorded four solo tunes for the Okeh label, followed by a 1929 session that yielded two released tracks. His work appeared in 1962 on the album Music of Roscoe Holcomb and Wade Ward. He won first place at the Galax, Virginia Old Time Fiddler's Convention eight times between 1936 and 1968, and his Gibson RBâ11 5âstring banjo was in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. He died on May 29,â¯1971, in Independence, Virginia.
