U.N.L.V., a hip-hop group from New Orleans, Louisiana, became active in 1992 and consisted of Lil Ya (Yaphet Jones), Tec-9 (Reginald Manuel), and Yella Boy (Albert Thomas). Their debut album, 6th & Baronne, was released in 1993 on Cash Money Records. The group's subsequent albums included Straight Out Tha Gutta (1994) and Mac Melph Calio (1995), with Mannie Fresh providing beats. In 1996, U.N.L.V. released Uptown 4 Life, which charted at number 86 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The group's success was impacted by the murder of Yella Boy in 1997. After leaving Cash Money Records, U.N.L.V. released several more albums, including The Return Of U.N.L.V.: Trend Setters (2001) and Keep It Gutta (2003).
