Ana Serrano van der Laan, known professionally as Ana Laan, was born on February 10, 1967, in Madrid, Spain. She grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, and later moved to England before returning to Spain to study English philology. Laan began her musical career in Spain, collaborating with various Spanish-language artists. Under the pseudonym Rita Calypso, she released her first two albums through Siesta Records. Her debut solo album, using the name Ana Laan, Oregano, was released in 2004 and featured collaborations with Juan Campodónico and Jorge Drexler. The album received critical acclaim, earning a spot on the Chicago Tribune's top ten best Latin recordings of the year and winning the Independent Music Award for Best Latin Album. In 2007, she released Chocolate & Roses, which included songs in multiple languages.
