Paul Oscarâ¯Beuselinck, known professionally as Paulâ¯Nicholas, was born 3â¯Decemberâ¯1944 in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, and became an English singer, actor, and producer. He began recording in the midâ1960s under the names Paulâ¯Dean and Oscar, later adopting the stage name Paulâ¯Nicholas. His first major chart success came in 1976 with "Reggae Like It Used to Be", which reached the UK number 20 and subsequently entered the UK number 10, followed by "Dancing with the Captain" and "Grandma's Party". The 1977 single "Heaven on the 7th Floor" peaked at number 6 on the United States Billboard Hot 100, earned a gold record, and topped the New Zealand charts, while 1978âs "On the Strip" entered the United States Billboard number 100. His studio albums Paulâ¯Nicholas (1977), On the Strip (1978), and Thatâs Entertainment (1993) showcased a mix of pop and musicalâtheatre material. Paulâ¯Nicholasâs theatrical career highlighted leading roles in Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar (1972), and Cats (1981), where he originated Rumâ¯Tumâ¯Tugger. On television he starred in the BAFTAâwinning sitcom Just Good Friends (1983â86), earning a comedy nomination, and later appeared on East Enders and The Real Marigold Hotel. His 2021 release Gold and autobiography Musicals Marigolds & Me document a career that spans pop hits, stage work, and production, with his most recent London stage role in Fawlty Towers: The Play (2024/25).
