Biography

The Turtle Island Quartet, a string quartet blending jazz, classical, and rock music, was formed in 1985 by David Balakrishnan, Darol Anger, and Mark Summer in San Francisco. Their debut album, Turtle Island String Quartet, was released on Windham Hill Records in 1988. The group's repertoire includes jazz standards and original compositions spanning various genres. Notable works include Balakrishnan's arrangement of "Stolen Moments" by Oliver Nelson and "A Night in Tunisia" by Dizzy Gillespie, which was nominated for a Grammy Award. The quartet won a Grammy Award for their version of A Love Supreme by John Coltrane in 2007. They collaborated with artists such as Paquito D'Rivera and the Ying Quartet, and released albums like Metropolis, Skylife, and 4 + Four.
