The Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1965 by the government of Tokyo, is one of the country's prominent symphony orchestra. Established to commemorate the 1964 Summer Olympics, the orchestra initially focused on classical music but later expanded its repertoire to include other symphonic works. The orchestra's home base is the Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo, where it performs regularly alongside appearances at Suntory Hall and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space. Notable conductors have included Hiroshi Wakasugi, Eliahu Inbal, and Gary Bertini, who directed all of Gustav Mahlerâs symphonies with the ensemble. The orchestra has recorded various soundtracks, including Dragon Quest with Koichi Sugiyama and music for Nodame Cantabile. Kazushi Åno became the orchestra's director musical in 2015. In 2025, conductor and violinist Pekka Kuusisto was appointed principal conductor of the ensemble, starting from April 2028.
