Biography
Alan Gilbert, born on February 23, 1967, in New York City, is an American conductor and violinist. The son of two New York Philharmonic violinists, he began his musical education at a young age. Gilbert studied music at Harvard University and later pursued conducting studies at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School. Gilbert's career took off in the mid-1990s when he served as an assistant conductor with the Cleveland Orchestra from 1995 to 1997. He became Santa Fe Operaâs first music director in 2003, conducting his inaugural production of Verdi's Falstaff. In 2009, Gilbert was appointed as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, a position he held until 2017. Since 2019, he has served as Principal Conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, and in January 2020, he was appointed Music Director of the Royal Swedish Opera.
