Biography

Klaus Hermann Wilhelm Tennstedt, born in 1926, in Merseburg, Germany, was a conductor and violinist. He began his musical education at age six and later studied music in Leipzig. After becoming concertmaster of the Städtisches Orchester Halle in 1948, health issues led him to transition to conducting in 1952, making his debut directing Rudolf Wagner-Régeny’s Der Günstling. Tennstedt served as Generalmusikdirektor at various theaters in the DDR before moving to Sweden in 1971 and then to West Germany. His international breakthrough came in the 1970s with notable interpretations of Mahler's works. He held positions with the NDR-Sinfonieorchester Hamburg and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, becoming its Chief Conductor from 1983 to 1987 and later an honorary conductor. Tennstedt passed away in 1998, in Heikendorf, Germany.
