Biography

Titus Groan was a British progressive rock band formed in England. The group, named after a character from Mervyn Peake's novels, consisted of guitarist and keyboardist Stewart Cowell, saxophonist/flutist/oboist Tony Priestland, drummer Jim Toomey, and bassist John Lee. In 1970, the band released their self-titled debut album Titus Groan, which combined rock elements with distinctive wind instrumentation, alongside the single "Open the Door Homer." Despite their unique sound, Titus Groan disbanded shortly after their debut release. Jim Toomey later played with The Tourists. The band's song "Can't Find the Words to Say" appeared in the 1970 film Permissive. Their music has been reissued multiple times on various labels, including Esoteric Recordings and Lost Century Records.
