Djam Karet, an instrumental progressive rock band from Topanga, California, was founded in 1984 by guitarists Gayle Ellett and Mike Henderson, bassist Henry J. Osborne, and drummer Chuck Oken Jr. The band's name is derived from an Indonesian word meaning "elastic time". Initially known for their improvised performances on the southern California college circuit, Djam Karet released their debut album No Commercial Potential in 1985. Their breakthrough came with The Ritual Continues (1987), which was named "Number 2 Album Of The Year" by Electronic Musician. In 1989, they released Reflections From The Firepool, which was recognized as the second-best independent album of the year by Rolling Stone. Djam Karet's discography includes notable releases such as Burning The Hard City and Suspension & Displacement (both 1991), Collaborator (1994) featuring guest musicians, and The Devouring (1997).
