Biography

Born in 1966 in Le Tampon, a town on Reunion Island, Fred Belhomme grew up in Trois Mares. During his childhood, Fred Belhomme was fascinated by the processions organized by the Malbars, Réunion's Indian community, and learned to play the drums and rhythms they used, gradually introducing him to music. A second aesthetic shock came when he encountered maloya, a style of music typical of the island's former slave populations, which he came into contact with through Firmin Viry. He joined Danyèl Waro's group in the 1990s and took part in the singer's European tours, before taking a break to devote himself to his main job as a bricklayer. Renamed Ti Fred for the stage, he also formed his own group, with whom he began composing. His first album, Sitantèleman , was released in 2005 and became a commercial success, with Danyèl Waro as producer. Participating in the promotion of maloya and its cultural origins, Ti Fred presented Kozker in 2009, his second album, which he unveiled live in concert before becoming more discreet in the 2010s.
