Biography

Maya Kamaty, born on September 26, 1985 in La Réunion, is a singer from Réunion, daughter of Gilbert Pounia, leader of the group Ziskakan. Trained at the Conservatoire de Musique de La Réunion, she rediscovered her musical roots while studying in Montpellier. In 2012, she founded her band and began performing live. Her debut album, Santié Papang (2014), was a critical success and earned her several awards, including the Prix Musiques de l'Océan Indien. Her second album, Pandiyé (2019), marks an evolution towards a more electro sound, while retaining her maloya roots. Maya Kamaty continues to perform live, notably at the Francofolies de La Réunion in 2020. In 2022, she published"Meute" for International Women's Day, and in 2024, she appeared in the documentary series "Cari VIP" on Canal+ Réunion. Maya Kamaty is renowned for her ability to modernize maloya while respecting its traditions, integrating a variety of influences from pop to electro, and singing mainly in Reunionese Creole.
