Biography

Thomas Anthony Whitfield was born on April 30, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan. He began playing piano at age five and organ by ten. After graduating from Central High School, he attended the Detroit Conservatory of Music and taught at Finney High School. In 1977, Whitfield co-founded The Thomas Whitfield Company with Tyrone Hemphill. Their debut release "Brand New" came out in 1978 under Sound of Gospel Records. After local success with "Brand New" and Things That We Believe, Vol. I and Vol. II, Whitfield’s breakthrough album Hallelujah Anyhow! was released in 1983 and stayed on Billboard’s Gospel Music charts for over a year. In 1984, he produced Vanessa Bell Armstrong's debut project Peace Be Still, earning his first GRAMMY nomination. He also worked with notable artists such as Shirley Caesar, Yolanda Adams, Douglas Miller, Paul Morton, Keith Pringle, and Aretha Franklin. Whitfield passed away on June 20, 1992 in Southfield, Michigan.
