Biography
The Tea Party was formed in 1990 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, by vocalist and guitarist Jeff Martin, bassist Stuart Chatwood, and drummer Jeff Burrows. The trio had previously performed together in highâschool bands and decided to name their new group after the Beat generation poetsâ âtea parties.â Their first selfâreleased album, The Tea Party (1991), showcased a psychedelicâblues blend and was distributed through their own label, Eternal Discs. In 1993 the band signed with EMI Music Canada and issued Splendor Solis, which introduced their signature use of Indian and MiddleâEastern instrumentation. The breakthrough came with The Edges of Twilight (1995), whose single "Sister Awake" reached the top of Canadian radio charts and earned doubleâplatinum certification in Canada and platinum in Australia. Subsequent releases-Transmission (1997), Triptych (1999), The Interzone Mantras (2001), and Seven Circles (2004)-continued to chart and garnered multiple Juno nominations. The group disbanded in 2005 but reâformed in 2011, touring Canada and Australia and releasing The Ocean at the End (2014). They followed with Black River EP (2019) and Blood Moon Rising (2021) and continued to perform, achieving over three million sales worldwide and multiple gold, platinum, and doubleâplatinum certifications.
