Biography

The Canadian frontman Ian Thornley formed Big Wreck with guitarist Brian Doherty and bass player Dave Henning in 1992, while all three musicians were attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Originally known as "Still Waters," the group performed locally and released the debut album In Loving Memory Of... in 1998. "The Oaf (My Luck Is Wasted)" peaked at number 9 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Chart, with "That Song" going to number 32. In Loving Memory Of... was popular in Canada, too, where it went double platinum and earned four different Top 40 hits. Big Wreck's second album The Pleasure & the Greed followed in 2001 and went to number 10 on Billboard's Canadian Albums Chart. The band members went their separate ways in 2002, but Thornley and Henning reunited in 2012 for the album Albatross, which reached number 5 on the Canadian Albums Chart and was nominated for a Juno Award as "Rock Album of the Year." 2014's Ghosts peaked at number 5 in Canada and earned the band another Juno Award nomination. Big Wreck returned to the number 5 slot with 2017's Grace Street and 2019's ...But for the Sun, as well. 7 followed in 2023, featuring songs that had previously been released on a series of EPs. The band took a similar approach to 2024's Pages, releasing the album's material in smaller-sized EPs and earning hits with tracks like "Bail Out" (number 22 on Canada's Rock Songs chart) and "Summerlong" (number 20 on Canada Rock Songs).
