Biography

Joe Jackson is one of the leading British songwriters of the post-punk era. Born David Ian Jackson in Burton upon Trent, England, on August 11, 1954, he came to prominence in the post-punk era with the 1979 albums Look Sharp! and I'm the Man. In 1982, he achieved international commercial success with his sophisticated pop-rock album Night and Day. This gifted pianist has been as interested in swing-era jazz and Latin jazz with Jumpin' Jive (1981) and Body and Soul (1984), as he has been in film music with Mike's Murder (1983) and Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988), and in classical orchestral music with Night Music (1995) and Symphony No. 1 (1999). Between these ambitious projects, Joe Jackson continued to record in his trademark piano-rock style, with albums such as Blaze of Glory (1989), Laughter & Lust (1991) and Night and Day II (2000). In 2008, he formed a trio under his own name for the album Rain, followed by a return to swing jazz with the Duke Ellington tribute The Duke (2012). He then composed pop-rock suites for Fast Forward (2015) and Fool (2019), then took a detour into cabaret in Mr. Joe Presents Max Champion in "What a Racket!" (2023), before returning to his standard formula in Hope and Fury (2026).
