Biography

The Irish Descendants are folk group from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The band was formed in 1990 by Con O'Brien, D'Arcy Broderick, Ronnie Power, and Larry Martin. The band gained traction with their debut album Misty Morning Shore (1991) and signed with Warner Music Canada. Their major label debut Look to the Sea (1993) was followed by Gypsies & Lovers (1994). The latter won the Roots & Traditional Album of the Year award at the Juno Awards and the Entertainer of the Year award at the East Coast Music Awards. Tensions led to D'Arcy Broderick's departure after their 1996 album Livin' on the Edge. The Irish Descendants continued releasing albums such as Blooming Bright Star (2001) and Across the Water (2004), and were selected as the official band for Newfoundland's 500th anniversary celebrations in 1996, performing for Queen Elizabeth II.
